Sarasota is a city located in Sarasota County on the southwestern coast of Florida, United States. Beaches, resorts, and the Sarasota School of Architecture are some of the area’s cultural and environmental attractions. The city is situated south of Tampa Bay, north of Fort Myers, and south of Punta Gorda. Sarasota Bay and several barrier islands between the bay and the Gulf of Mexico are its official boundaries. It was designated as a certified local government in 1986. Sarasota is the county seat of Sarasota County and a major city in the Sarasota metropolitan area. According to the 2020 U.S. census, the population of Sarasota was 54,842.
Several keys, including Lido Key, St. Armands Key, Otter Key, Casey Key, Coon Key, Bird Key, and portions of Siesta Key, are located within the city limits of Sarasota. Longboat Key is the largest key separating the bay and the gulf, but the new county line of 1921 divided it evenly. At the request of John Ringling in the mid-1920s, the portion of the key that parallels the Sarasota city boundary and extends to the new county line along the bayfront of the mainland was removed from the city boundaries in order to avoid city taxation of his planned developments at the southern tip of the key. Despite the fact that they were never completed due to the rapidly deteriorating economy, these development concessions granted by the city have never been revoked, and the county has retained control over these lands.
With the real estate boom of the early 20th century, the city limits grew to encompass almost 70 square miles (180 km2). In 1926, the wild speculation boom began to collapse, and the city limits began to shrink to less than a quarter of their former size.
