Due to vast areas of wetland immediately west of the city’s downtown, linear development occurred to the north and south. Prior to the 1960s, the city was only a few blocks wide but over 100 blocks long. In the 1960s, with improved access and drainage, large-scale development finally expanded to the city’s west. With the exception of the uninhabited “Water Catchment Area” in the city’s northwest, the city limits were not significantly expanded. It is now known as Grassy Waters and serves as both a reservoir for the city’s drinking water and a nature preserve.
